How important is a battery switch can I live without it or is it worth the couple of hundred for it

If you're referring to this type of switch then I'd say yes. BTW it only cost about $50 and easy to install.

I have lived without one for 7 years, and both my batteries are still alive. Saying that it is an easy install.

I installed this on my Chaparral Cuddy, saved me from being stranded or needing a jump too many times to count. Simple to install for sure.

Well does that price also include the 2nd battery and perhaps a battery box, what about the extra battery cables that will be needed, what about the labor to install the system?

A question that comes to mind is why do you think that you need one? Do you plan on spending a lot of time running equipment that draws current while the motor is not running?

Not that 2nd battery is not a good idea as it is but do you really need one? I spent least 12 years with my father running small boats across a large lake day in and day out we never had but one battery.

if I buy a 2nd battery should one be just to start and the other a deep cycle for everything else? I kind of like the sounds of the loons and other stuff so I haven't used the radio much in the past, but might be different now on a pontoon.

If you had a boat that got way out in the ocean or Gulf, you might need 2 batteries. Pontoons are not used in that manner.

Or, if you have a huge power sucking amplifier with your sound system (with subwoofer) and you sit for hours floating around listening to tunes, you might need a 2nd battery--or 3rd battery.

Or if you have a trolling motor, you might need a 2nd battery.

I've had boats since 1974 with one battery, and I've never been stranded.
