Shallow Mooring

#1 Post by jeffh129 » Sat Apr 25, 2015 1:24 pm

I have the chance to rent a mooring spot for our pontoon boat only five minutes from our house. This would be ideal!! I am a bit concerned of the depth of the mooring. It's only about two feet deep. The pier is in a channel, in a sheltered bay on a freshwater lake. The entire lake is about 950 acres, the sheltered bay is about 30 acres. I would be about 100 yards into the channel, around a slight bend. So we are talking no wind / wave action at all. The bottom is muck. The pontoon boat is 24 feet long with a 50 horsepower motor with power trim.

Do you think two feet is enough depth to allow for the draft of the pontoon boat? I'm thinking I should be alright with that depth, but I do value other opinions.

Thanks.

I fish in two FOW a lot, do you worry about fluctuating lake levels at all?

The lake should not fluctuate. It was a rather dry winter, so if anything it may even rise a bit if we get good rains.

You fish in two feet of water? Does that mean you are pontooning in that depth?

For mooring 2 feet is plenty as long as you've got your motor tilled up and out of the water as you should. So other than needing to be careful and trimming your motor up as you motor in and out of your sheltered location I'd think you should be good to go just so long as there is no unexpected drop in water level....

Storing a boat in 2' of water and a mud bottom would work if the lake water levels don't fluctuate. I wouldn't want to start an engine in less than 4' of water and suck mud into the water inlet, however.

I'd be using a remote controlled trolling motor to get out into the river channel.

I say you would be ok as was said if the lake level doesn't drop on you and you start your motor trimmed a little with the intake just be low the surface like 4 or 5 inches. troll motor would be nice if you have one.
