I think you'd have a hard time insuring a boat lift since they're portable.

My boathouse is insured on my homeowner's insurance policy because it's a real permanent structure driven into the ground on steel poles.

You might want to check with your insurance agent to see if he has any suggestions.

I did call my agent Friday . They told me call Boat US first as that's who I have my boat coverage through. It was cheaper than what they could offer so I went with Boat US. Maybe they are a bit bitter who knows. Boat US does not insure lifts for the reason you stated above and others. I can add a rider to my home owners I think but just wanted to see what others have done. Itsd a 10,000 investment that is pretty easy to trailer away until its in the water. :donno

We have our dock (with Hydohoist) insurered with a rider on our homeowner's policy as an "out building". But we just found out recently (thanks to high lake levels right now), that any damage caused from the high water would not be covered since an "out building" is not intended to be something used over water. The covereage was basically just going to protect us in the event of a tornado. One of our neighbors with a dock a few down from us told us about Shelter Insurance carries actual Dock Insurance. They are getting their walkway replaced due to the damage when the lake level came up. So we are going to look into that insurance as well.

Apparently it depends on your agent -- if they understand about boat docks or not. Apparently this Shelter agent lives right across the cove from us and he understands all about docks and the coverages available.

Shelter Insurance is one of the conservative, really good companies. I would think you'd have to get homeowners' insurance with them to get the coverage, however. And to get the best rates on homeowners', you've got to insure a couple of cars with them.

Nothing wrong with changing insurance companies ever few years to keep rates down. As they up replacement amounts and rates every year for "inflation." I last year was paying insurance rates on a house that was $150K more than my house is worth.
