Adding lift strakes
I finally found a local fab shop that can/will install lift strakes on my toon.
He will only be adding one strake to each toon. Should I go inside or outside?
Also, he asked how long I would like the strakes. Anyone have an idea what length I should use?
My toon is a 22 footer. I saw a G3 today with strakes and the strakes started approx 1 foot from the
nose cone weld line where it meets the rest of the log.
Thanks in advance!!

Re: Adding lift strakes
Check with your boat's manufacturer before doing this. I planned to do it on my Sun Tracker but they told me that any unauthorized welding done on the toons would invalidate any warranty on them.
As far as how long and exact placement, try and find a boat that's the same make and model, but with factory strakes and measure it out.

Re: Adding lift strakes
What brand, model and length boat are you wanting to modify? How many toons and what size engine are you running now?
Manufacturers have spent substantial engineering and test time on the water designing their lifting strakes. They have specific lengths, angles, material gauge, placement front and back, placement from the bottom keel. It's just a complicated subject. On late model boats, manufacturers will often furnish the materials and ship fabricated strakes to a dealer with another boat delivery.
Let us know the above and good suggestions will follow.

I don't think I have any warranty left on my boat. To the best of my knowledge, I'm the 3rd owner and the PO didn't mention anything about a warranty.Bamaman wrote:What brand, model and length boat are you wanting to modify? How many toons and what size engine are you running now?
Details, I guess I should add a signature at some point. lol
22' Sun Chaser, Yami F115 TLR 4 stroke, 2-25"D toons.
I contacted the local dealer about adding a center toon. They contacted the manufacturer and were told my boat didn't come with a center toon so they would not sell me one.

Re: Adding lift strakes
with motor/boat combo you should benefit from strakes in theory. it's such a fine process, like has been said, get the exact strake and put in the exact location. good luck.

Also check too..
if those d shape toons are filled with foam ..... I was looking at a sunchaser before i bought my Manitou, and the one i was looking at had foam filled toons. It might not be a problem. i could only magin it would be melting on the inside as you weld on the outside!
good luck, let us know how you make out . im interested to hear.

I believe your confusing sun catcher for sun chaser. I could be wrong but I don't think sun chaser used foam.

I don't think I have foam in the tubes.ron nh wrote:I believe your confusing sun catcher for sun chaser. I could be wrong but I don't think sun chaser used foam.
I looked at a sun catcher today at bass pro. It was a tritoon with strakes.
Then strakes started at the weld mark of the nose cone/tube and stopped a couple feet short of the end of the tube.
I thought that was strange since the back half of the boat will be in the water on plane, but hell, I'm no boat engineer
or hydrodynamics engineer. lol
I'm interested in all the feedback I can get on the strake subject before I pull the trigger.

Re: Adding lift strakes
Check out this website. These guys build all kinds of pontoons and pontoon boats.

One picture I saw was lifting strakes on a center log with a motor mount. The strakes appear to go from aft of the nose cone to the stern.
Its one of the reasons I had my center log made locally and with a flat bottom.

I contacted Avalon about getting a pony tube. They said no since I don't own an Avalon.
I guess I need to try Bennington.

Re: Adding lift strakes
Actually the prices weren't that different. About $2300 with the strakes but the shipping from Indiana or Ohio, I forget which, was the deal breaker. With my new center log I have never had a boat that got on plane faster.Crab Island Cruiser wrote:I bet that cost you a pretty penny.RcgTexas wrote:Check out this website.
