Tropical "Depression" Bill

#1 Post by krusskruss » Fri Jun 19, 2015 11:44 am

Now I know why they call them tropical depressions. TD Bill hit Lake Lewisville here in Texas leaving widespread damage. I though my boat would be fine since I tie it off well. Unfortunately, 4 of six lines parted leaving my boat to crash into the dock enough to put a hole in my right log. I think I got off lucky though as you can see, we have sunken boats and entire docks ruined.

Someone was on my dock when during some of it:

Wow- that's insane! I guess that's why you have insurance, although it doesn't take away from the emotional attachment we have to our toys. There's times we get a lot of snow here in Montana- but we don't get the storms like you southern folks do. As much as I hate winter, I'll take it over hurricanes, tropical storms, and tornados!

Insurance or not, that sucks because it will take a chunk of your boating season. Hopefully the repairs will be quick!

On the bright side, it would be a great time to clean the logs on that tri toon in the third pic!

Seriously that was some terrible damage! must have been a Tornado ?

Wow!!! That's just crazy scary. Glad no one was hurt!
Hopefully you you can get a new log soon. If that's your only damage and if it's going to take a couple of months for repairs then I would drain the log of water then fill in the gaps of the hole with silicone then put some gorilla tape over that. Won't be pretty but if I am correct that is the top of the nose cone? If no other structural damage. Atleast you could still use the boat until new log comes in and repair shop has the time to replace it. Good luck and hope everything works out for you.

My toon was a casualty in this storm (A Dock). Although cosmetic, and i made out A LOT better than some boats..My questions are

1)How do they repair the actual pontoons (fronts tubes are bent)
2) Ive come to learn the boating industry is in NO hurry, what time frame are we looking at
3) Anyone in the area know a good repair shop (No BASSPRO)
4) Before i file a claim any advice

Well the sad part is they are talking about many of the lakes being closed till August due to HIGH WATER. So even if your boat is not damaged still can't use it. Pretty crazy spring we have had so far!! :donno

That's an understatement! In your area I would say next year ! :donno

Its been my experience that dealers can't or won't afford repair help. they concentrate on sales. I have seen new boats take two weeks for delivery. But take that with a grain of salt because I am not unbiased when it comes to boat dealers in Texas.

Watch, and there'll be a bunch of "SOTB" (South Of The Border) Shops that'll be fixing boats at a discount....

I scuffed up the aluminum on the holes in my pontoon and filled them with JB weld WaterWeld putty. No water is going to splash in there this summer.

The local Berkshire dealer estimated just under $20k to replace both logs, rub rails around the boat, fix damaged railing etc... Insurance approved today! :dance
I think that I will manage to scrape up the $320 deductible for a rebuilt boat!

In the mean time, the boats on the lake, working great, just looking a bit trashed. I hope to schedule the work for the off season.

One thing's for sure, I got off easy in comparison to some.
