When to use Blower?
Hello Everyone,
I am new to owning a boat and this will be the first of many posts for me I’m sure. I recently purchased a 1992 Bass Buggy 18 with a 50 Horse 2 cycle Johnson. Can someone please explain to me when I should pull out my blower and when it should be pressed back in?

Re: When to use Blower?
Blowers are typically used on Inboards and I/O boats. They are to remove the possibility of an explosion from trapped gas fumes.
I would venture to say that a previous owner had this switch laying around and installed it. I would operate it and see what it turns on, or trace the wires.
or I could be totally off point, and it operates the Hyper Drive system that allows you and your 50 hp to reach Ludacris speed.

Actually, I always wondered where that switch was....curtiscapk wrote:to turn on her blower!PlaynDoc wrote:maybe it turns on the co-captain?
But if the only place her blower can be turned on is on the toon, I'm going to have to find a REALLY secluded cove...

Serously, sjp1311 was correct, unless you have a compartment like a fuel compartment there should be no need for a blower. I have only seen blowers in inboard engine compartments.

Re: When to use Blower?
I've never seen a blower on an outboard boat either. To the OP, blowers are used on inboard/outboard boats, or straight inboard boats. Their purpose is to remove fuel vapors from the engine compartment before starting the boat. That prevents any sparks (should not be any) from igniting fuel vapors (should not be any) trapped in an engine compartment, causing an explosion. I think the recommendation is to use them for 5 minutes prior to starting, and I think they are recommended when idling as well, but I could be wrong about that. In a perfect world, there will never be fuel vapors in the engine compartment, and there will be no sparks to ignite them, either. However, there are a few of these explosions every year.
On an outboard, I don't know what its purpose would be.
BTW, I know a lot of people with I/O's and inboards do not use them. I have to believe some of those explosions each year could be prevented.
Wow, everyone else's answer was a LOT more fun than mine!
