Keeping lake scum off toons?

Yeah its definitely helped. I'm still waiting on BobG to come back by, though. I'm curious about this truck stop service. Maybe I could have them polish 'em all up, before I put the sharkhide on.

Hey, it's just what some others here have posted up.
I mean if you think about it, you see an awful lot of very shiny 18-wheelers. SOMEbody probably does that for a fee.

Yeah I called my trucker buddy and he said there's a place he knows of, in weatherford. But it would likely be about $300 for my boat. Eh, for that I think I can get what little scum is on there, off by myself. Then just put the sharkhide on.

Does sharkhide change the color or look of the metal any? I'd prefer it just be clear that way they retain the stock look.

Ok so based on reading all this I think I'm going to try the Lemon Pledge trick. I pull my boat out of the water every time so it won't be much trouble to give it a wipe down.

Not sure how to get the existing (8 months) of crude off though. I see people have used simple green and Star Brite Aluminum Ultimate Aluminum Hull Cleaner/Restorer. I guess using a Scotch brite pad in conjunction with those cleaners?

What I don't want to do is scratch the heck out of my toons with the pad. What grit scotch brite pad? Or other recommendation on what to actually use in conjunction with a cleaning product that won't scratch the toons?

Regarding Scotch Brite Pads.....

Be careful.... go horizontally only (back and forth) not circular or up and down. Forget the green ones you get at the grocery store. They make 3 commercial grades that I know of: brown/purple for heavy cutting, gray for medium, and white for final work.

I got the gray and white ones. Trick is to ALWAYS KEEP water, or liquid cleaner on them. Gray did scratch our toons (fine horizontal scratches) and I used Simple Green as a cleaner with water keeping it very wet. After 6 hours on one toon side, I was beat..... but it looked super clean again.

as stated above in this thread, we took the boat to our dealer who acid washed it and put the Shark Hide on. All scratches are no longer showing. All uniform clean and sealed.

Someone also asked if it changed the color, YES it did.... but I'm fine with it as it's a bright Alum / White look.

How far will a powerwasher go, by itself? I've got about 4 lake trips worth of scum on there. Not much, but I can tell its only going to get worse. I bought two power washers at a garage sale for $20, that I'm hoping to combine into one. If that doesn't work out I'll probably just buy a new one. So will a powerwasher alone have any effect?

It will get off what it can , mostly surface crud but it won't make them look like what you have in mind. Gonna need some elbow grease.

I had NO scum on mine, just oxidation where the bright alum turned spotted blackish UGLY, UGLY, UGLY where all the water hits while running. Powerwashing won't do anything for that. Needs either, scotch brite (carefully), or acid washing ( works fantastic) or polishing by hand or a buffer (way too much work for me).

Oh, and it took less than a year to have it look UGLY..... Looks great again now (acid wash and Shark hide)...... hopefully it will last a few years.

I used JJV's Best two years ago and I made the mistake of getting it on the anodized trim and it removed some of the anodization leaving spots, at the time there was no warning in the instructions or on the YouTube label to keep it off anodized aluminum, I guess I should have known better but it's not an acid wash and is non-toxic.. Also it was a bear to use without leaving streaks even after following instructions on the YouTube video, It does remove the scum and algae and isn't toxic. I have my toons acid washed every Summer instead of using JJV's Best.
