Getting my Toons wrapped today

I found a way to keep my toons looking good
I'm having them wrapped in a brushed aluminum wrap material like what's done in the automotive side. It's 3m and sticks very well.
Has anyone tried??? I'm planning on cutting it
Above waterline and seal the edges with silicone
Should be done Wednesday I'll post before and after pix

I'm sorry but I don't follow the reasoning here. Are your pontoons not already made of alum? I would tend to think that in short order that this "brushed" finish will look no different than the mill finish on the pontoons. The only way to stop the finish from degrading would be to coat it with some sort of a protective clear coating such as Shark Hide etc. It would also seem rather difficult to wrap the toons tightly enough that you don't have any movement of the outer layer which will likely cause some abrasive toon damage in the long run; any water trapped behind may also hasten corrosion damage.... Also once underway the force of water will look for and find absolutely any way in and under this wrap unless sealed in place with weld bead or high quality epoxy it will likely rip it loose....

I went the shark Hyde route and it was in my opinion it's more hassle then it's worth!
My experience- Once you (I) put on the shark Hide and the toons get moss from sitting in the lake you Or I have to remove the shark Hyde to get this area completely clean.
I researched this wrap and have references from Florida that a lot of tooners
Wrap their toons with no peeling or damage. It has to be a good quality wrap
needs to be sealed on the edges,cut right at the waterline And the installer needs
To know what they're doing.

I'm just tired of the toons looking horrible year after year. Pulling it off will be no different
Than a automobile- its similar to the clear bra that is on $70,000 corvettes.
Well just see how it goes. I'm not too concerned. I just thought I'd try it

To this end I don't care... My boat sits wet all year and I pull it once in the spring to powerwash the growth....

Sounds more like you are actually talking about some sort of plastic film? I was taking that you were talking about metal. That may prove an interesting material to try out.

I'm somewhat familiar with this product. Its made by 3M and called "Vantage". It has been used successfully for a few years now. I know of a couple people in my area who have had it on their toons for a couple years and so far it has worked out very well with no ill effect or peeling. It actually looks very good from what I have seen and I believe it comes in a couple different colors including silver and black. Premier was putting it on their toons from the factory, too. I think is a good idea. But, the Sharkhide is so easy to use. If it starts to get splotchy, just run another coat over it. It dissolves itself and puts down a new coat with one swipe. Takes 10 minutes to refresh mine after every season.

After polishing, I used lacquer cleaner to clean my toons. Everytime I tried to coat the toons with Sharkhide, I got a bunch of black "runs" where the aluminum oxide wouldn't come out of the cracks and the welding slag pieces. It's much easier to polish the toons 1x or 2x per year than get the tarnish off.

And as far as keeping toons clean: As long as you leave your boat in the water all year, your toons will be green and grungy. If you really want to do keep it clean, either keep the boat on a trailer or put it on a lift.

My last pontoon was 28 years old and didn't have a mark on the toons. Because it was kept out of the sun and out of the water in a boathouse.

Yep. A lift in a covered slip is the only way to go. They can be found really cheap around LotO, too. BTW, we will be down at Lake of the Ozarks the week of July 4th, to demo our Manitou that Denise and I helped design and begged for them to build!

Yeah the covered slip I have but the lift is out of my budget for the time being as we are only allowed one type of lift on our floating docks and they range from 4,500.00 to 5,500.00 dollars.... Not cheap!
