Simmon motorsports ECM upgrade on a 90HP four stroke review

#1 Post by mzodarg » Fri Jan 15, 2016 6:33 pm

Ok so I had the opportunity to put the boat in water today. The results were not as expected. I picked up 2 MPH, hit 30 MPH. The boat was up on plane much faster then the stock 90, RPMs at WOT was still low at 5200 rpms.

This was all done running the stock 15x17P aluminum prop, engine mounted in the second hole from the top Image

I did notice from a stop, motor tucked the launch was much harder, tilt and trim didn't effect speed as much as lowering the front of the vessel.

Now I guess I need to chase down the low WOT RPMs, my guess is the prop. I think the motor is mounted in the right hole.

Overall review: For $650, I'm not sure it's worth it. To be fair to Simmon, I need to trace down my RPM issue and then I will make my final assessment.

I'm pretty new to this. What is an ECM upgrade?

The ECM upgrade is a tune. The 75-115 motors are the same engine. I have a 90hp engine and the tune took me to an estimated 125HP.

ECM is Engine Computer Module, it controls fuel flow, timing and all other engine functions.

It looks like you are having setup issues
you need to look at motor height and prop
what was you RPM and Speed before you upgraded you ecm

I would probably look at raising the motor one hole as it does not cost anything
maybe you can borrow a 15 pitch prop to raise your RPM

When i first got my boat i was runnning 22 MPH at 6400 RPM
I had the dealer lower it one hole and i was running 27 mph at 5800 RPM

hopefully someone with a 115 command thrust can chime in on what prop they are using and provide performance numbers

Keep hunting for that speed , it sounds like it is there, you just have to find it

Yep, I agree with Mike. But it takes alot of HP to see a speed difference. An extra 25 may get you 2 or 3. My upgrade was 85 hp, I only noticed 5 to 6 mph, but the holeshot and fuel economy were really improved upon. I would say, the upgrade has been paid for, by what I have saved in fuel over the last 3 years. I track it in my SmartGauge. I was burning 2.8 average MPG before and now its 4.2 MPG through combined RPM ranges. Keep tracking your results. Eric will tweak it, or refund your $ and take it back to stock, if your not happy. He's very easy to work with. This was my 3rd from him. Not doing the new Yamaha thats coming, because this new boat goes back to the factory after I get done with it. But I would love to see what the new 300 would do with it.

crookedlaker,

Speed was 28MP at 5100 rpms, I will be raising the motor one hole and see if the dealer will loan me a 15P prop to try.

Bryden24shp,
Yes, the hole shot is much improved and I did pickup 2 MPH, I'm going to chase the motor height and prop and see what I can improve.

I'll do that, first things is I am going to raise the motor and go from there. Looks like I may get an opportunity this Saturday.

Curious as to what prop are you running?

Ok thanks, I figured that you did not have a CT.

I did call tracker marine today, found out that since my motor is a CT it should be mounted in the third hole. So I dropped the boat off this afternoon and the dealer is raising it by one hole approximately 3/4 of an inch.

Tracker also tells me that I have the correct prop, so we shall see how much of an improvement if any by lifting the engine.

I hope he's not charging you much to raise it. A floor jack with a chunk of a 4x4 under the skeg and a buddy to steady it, is all you need. Super simple and fast.

No charge, warranty. I could have done it myself but the dealer will do it for free, in fact it's done already.
