HELP WITH MOTOR HEIGHT

#1 Post by DSwatloski » Thu Apr 21, 2016 7:46 pm

So Dealer messed up. This is on the lowest hole. It has four below it with 3/4" adjustments between the holes. The upper vent plate is 2-1/4 below the transom. To make it level with the transom is hole four. Should I go to five, all the way up and then back down if I get venting?

Dealer says he owes me an adjustment.

Lest you jump and say go even. I flood the back of my pontoon with a little up trim and if I open the gate create a foot bath like not tomorrow about 3'-4' a half inch deep inside the gate.

Max RPM is 4800 to 4900 at 22-23 MPH GPS, loaded with 6-7 people, two ice chests, kitchen sink etc. I was getting 27 MPH lightly loaded and cleaned up. Prop is a SS 15X15. Rest of the boat stats are in my signature.

I would have them raise it two holes at most then try it , My Harris came in one hole higher than yours and it ran 21 mph at 6200-6300 rpm My dealer lowered it one hole and now runs about 26 at 5700rpm. it made a big difference. Harris boats are made here in my home town of Fort Wayne IN. most of the ones i see at my dealer have the motors installed at the factory as they are owned by Brunswick who also owns Mercury. You would think they could get the motor heights correct the first time.
i also did the simon upgrade this winter and will do a real test this weekend if the weather holds, i did run it a little last sat I gained about 1 mph but i had a dinged prop on, i just got my refurbished one back from prop guy and will install tomorrow for better test.

To further muddy of the equation would be to ask how should they set the motor up for light or full load? If your generally loaded with only a couple of people then the motor height will be different than if your always loaded down with near max souls on board, 2 ice chest as well as the kitchen sink...

Smart aleck answers aside, I'd think that looking at your set up, Hole #4 would be good.

in my case my boat would run at 6200-6300 RPM with two or three people on board, it would probably rev more but is limited by the ecm to prevent over revving the engine. the factory stated RPM limit on my engine is 6000 rpm. I was told my the service manager that ideally the boat should turn 5800-6000 RPM with one person in boat. I would be curious to see what the OP's RPM and speed is with one person on the boat. I do also agree that the setup will have to be tailored to his typical load

I see what looks like strakes? just on the Insides or both sides of your toons? Your Command Thrust almost has an almost identical gear ratio as my Suzuki and 15 pitch is good for ~33-34 MPH @ 6000 rpm. I'd see if the dealer would let you borrow a 13 or 14 pitch to try out and see if you can get to 6000rpm with a LIGHT load. Also, with only 90hp and LARGE diameter prop I'd raise it up all the way and try it too, you have plenty of surface area!

Yes Strakes on the inside edges of the Pontoons. Next up is raising the motor. Once that is correct, then we look at re-propping. Thanks.
