Brand new Cypress Cay 230 problems! "HELP"

#1 Post by Malueg2 » Mon Jul 25, 2016 7:43 pm

Just purchased a 2016 Cypress Cay Seabreeze with merc 90 command thrust. At sale I inquired about upgrading and speed. Salesman has the identical boat one year older and assures me he is getting 28 mph. Specs say 24-28 mph in the book also.

Long story short the fastest with only one person on board and 1/4 tank of fuel on smooth water is 21.

Factory keeps working on fixes and now I can get it up to 23.8

Any help?

First question: What is your RPM at WOT and trimmed for best speed?

2nd question: What size prop are you running?

Wot speed is 23.8 at 5900 rams.
I believe it's a 13in by 13 pitch prop.
I can only trim up to 1/8 without prop cavitating.
Motor is all the way in bottom mounting position

Factory says trimming up to 1/8 is perfectly normal? I thought it should be higher, salesman gets his trim up above a 1/3.

Thanks again

A 90 CT should be swinging a much larger diameter prop than that. Something over 14" for sure, perhaps as big around as 15"

I run 14" x 11, 12, 13 Pitch on my 75 which is not a CT bottom end..

That's exactly what I keep on telling service and factory. They must think I'm a major pain.

Apparently they changed out transom pods mid model year and they are having some "known" issues. The factory is sending a few props to test.

The upgrade to the 150 wasn't worth it to me to get to 37 mph if I was getting 28, but now that I'm only getting 23 I realize I may have made a mistake.

I'm going to check on prop today. The more I think about it,I believe it may be a 15" X13 pitch.

Hate to say it but 23-26mph should be the expected range for a 90hp on 23' standard pontoon. Only another 1-2mph for a 115hp and 4-5mph more for a 150 on the same setup. I'm assuming the 150hp upgrade probably involved a 3rd tube of some sorts for the 37mph claim and a 6000-8000$ price jump.
