SOLID KEELS on Salt Water Edition South Bay 925 SS 3.0+???

#1 Post by BLUE by you » Mon Jan 16, 2017 2:39 pm

I'm looking at a 2016 SB 925. Dealer tells me the only difference between fresh water & salt water is the Anodes (which we can add no problem) and solid keels? Can anyone show me what he's talking about with Solid Keels? Says they can be welded closed??? Huh?? :donno

See the line going down the pontoon on the right. That would be the keel on this particular pontoon. In general though they are commonly a piece of angle that is randomly tack welded down it's length.

My Bennington has solid keels. There's no channel down the middle like a small angle would have. They're solid and welded in a very strong manner to the center bottom of the toon.

Some boats that have lifting strakes and the saltwater package will get strakes that are sealed on each end to keep saltwater out of the inside of the strakes. And they'll have larger anodes somewhere under the water line. My boat is not saltwater, and I've never even seen one this far inland.

This was my salt package: 5 anodes: one on each outer toon, two anodes on the lower unit of the Mercury, and a one large anode that bolts up under and across the motor mount on the middle toon. The bow fence is supposed to be reinforced, as are the nose cones.

I think my keel and the strakes are more unique to the hull performance package rather than the salt.

Mine has a solid keel that is sealed in the bow, and becomes a hollowed out channel at the stern.

The "V" channel that are the strakes are similar; they form a sealed edge in the bow, and open in the stern.

Maybe this helps.

Thanks all... If anyone has any other pics it would be great... I'm inspecting a boat this week and need to make sure I'm clear on WTH I'm talking about.
