Scratched toon
Last weekend my wife had a boat on each side of her loading and she freaked out having an audience. Bottom line, she ended up hitting the trailer a few feet off center and road up onto the guides that sit inside the pontoons. They are basically 2x4s bolted to vertical pieces welded to the trailer frame. There was sharp piece of metal a 90 degree angle that she rubbed against as she backed off to try it again. I ended up using a sawsall to cut off the 90 angle and I covered the whole area in a rubberized coating like you find on tool handles. I hope the pontoon don't start leaking
My wife is still pissed at me for being pissed at her. I'm sure you married guys know what that's like

It is very deep and should be repaired very soon. I had one like it and it split . Find a good welder and have it fixed.

Re: Scratched toon
naaaa, That's nothin. I've got scratches like that all over the inside of both my toons from the fork lifts at my marina. Been there for years now. Scratches in pontoons always seem to look horrible even though there superficial. The rental toons at my marina have scratches much worse than that all over their logs.

I do to but the nose cone seems more prone to split. I don.t know if it is the pounding or expansion that does it. Mine split 3 times in the same spot. The welder tried to make it near invisible and it just weakened it more

Re: Scratched toon
So to resurrect an old thread about toon scratches. Just bought my first used pontoon, a 2007 Bentley 20'. So, I discovered the wheels are really far back on a single axle pontoon trailer and you have to give yourself some extra room when turning. When pulling out from the previous owners, there was a concrete pillar that I managed to scrape along the side of the toon. Talk about mad!
So how do you know when you need to get it checked out? I sanded down the scratches with a palm sander quick because they were really sharp and cut my finger feeling it. There's an ever so slight dent you have to look for and feel. What's you opinion just from looking at the pictures?

Re: Scratched toon
I have worse scratches on inside of my logs and no problem in 13 years. My nose piece had to have a patch welded over cracks an so far is is good. Kinda ugly but good

I did the same thing to mine, Not as deep, They opened the friggen dam just when I was loading. It was tough, finally I went at it to fast and smacked it up.

Pontoons are tough. Enjoy the boat and don't worry about it.

I have to agree with Loyd on this one. If the scratch were further back maybe not an issue, but with it being on the nose cone, I would at least have someone check it out.. better safe than sorry.

Re: Scratched toon
My sea winch...ah lovely wife never wanted to drive the boat. She learned to back a trailer. The only rule was. No yelling or cussing and be patient unless you want to see her drive away and leave you in the lake.
She always did a great job. Got the boat hooked and winched and up the hill we would go. I got a good one.

Re: Scratched toon
Whether the scratch needs fixed probably depends on how big your engine is, how rough a water you go on an how fast you go.
