Boat hooks?

#1 Post by Renegade » Fri Jun 16, 2017 6:35 am

Hey guys, I'm looking for a boat hook for the toon and am wondering if you have any recommendations? I would like it to be fairly compact, floating, and decent quality. What are you guys using?

I cheaped out and bought just the screw-on hook & attached it to a cheap painter's extension pole. Works fine but doesn't seem as strong as the hooks that don't screw on.

What is the main use for a boat hook, am I missing out on something?

Strake and Curtiss,
That's like the one I use but I bought mine at Academy Sports.

I use mine for pushing off of docks, pulling the boat into the dock if the wind has pushed one end away while I tether the other, have used it to un-snag lines from submerged timber, fish hats and other items out of the water that have blown off the boat, and even used it one day to help pull in a 28" Blue Cat so I could release it per the Limits at the time.

All in all it's handy to have around.

I'll remember it for "poling" dogs around.

;-)

Personally, I've always thought dogs like that made pretty good dust mops.

Only if I did it your way, the end of the pole would be cleaner.

Like NHA said, there are a bazillion uses for one. Was one of the first accessories we added to our boat. Keep it on the floor against the long side of one of the front benches - always handy. Amazon has dozens. Ours is a 3 piece telescoping 96 incher from West Marine - $39. Love the dog lift (rescue). Saved a few vests, picked up a few lost Taylor Made fenders, and a Cowboys ball cap. It has easily paid for itself!

First thing I do is put the pole in my rod holder within reach! I think this is an overton's replacement now that I see it.

We sure miss Missy too! :prayer That little dog LOVED the water! She would literally swim over and wait for me to hook her out!

The best boathook I've owned expanded to 10 ft an had interchangeable accessory heads. Both hook and deck brushes. Invaluable for lassoing a piling when docking on a windy day.

Check around they make one that you cam extend when fully closed is only about 4-5' but ext nds up to 6-8'. That is what I have and it comes in handy when alone and tying to dock.

:thumbsup Pets can sure get their "hooks" into us, too! Nice. We can relate completely. Can I ask where you got the flag? Did you make it?

We have the one below and it's held up well. Will float if it falls in and telescopes to around 8 feet. I have some of those Velcro straps around my bimini pole that holds it upright by the captains chair. It's threaded so you can put other things like brushes on it. Do the floor every week with it and i can get in the water and get just about all of my middle toons scrubbed by doing part from the back of the boat and the rest from the front. You can't get between my logs really so it's nice to be able to get some of the funk off.
