Fuel Tank Relocate Anyone Done This?

#1 Post by trott46 » Sat Mar 27, 2010 4:36 pm

Last year i had a slight cavation issue and a lean issue with just a few people to one side. Been racking my brain and since we dont use the privacy room but for storage I thought I would try to relocate my fuel tank to the center of the toon instead of the side. Has anyone tried this?

I havnt re-located one but ive added one similar to what your describing. (a tank on both sides, a 15 and a 20 gal.)

its pretty easy to do, i'll post some pics of my install later tonight to help guide you

Ours came from the factory with a 29 gal. fuel tank smack dead in the middle right in front of the motor. It should be an easy and practical move I'd think and fairly easy to pull off.

The fuel tank is behind the curtain.

It still allows a walk through to back of boat.

What i got is all under the sundeck. to the right 3rd of it is the 30 gallon tank. then a devidor then a small box with both batterys and storage. what im thinking is to mover the tank to the left side witch is the middle of the boat and useing the right side for storage. and batterys. just not sure what problems i may run into or if this may throw off the balance on the boat for some reason.

The boat I pictured has the storage under the right outside just above the toon. We keep some life-jackets and bumpers (light stuff) in that storage area. You see the pull op cushion in the middle of your back seating area, anyway that's where the batteries are installed also dead in the middle of boat in front of fuel tank. Makes for a well balanced boat as far as the necessary heavy on-board fundamentals go.

that really annoyed me about my suntracker (05 regency with the I/O). with a full tank i noticed it listed to port and i felt i had to countersteer to keep a straight heading. where would you put the fuel filler and breather hoses if you centered the tank?

I would have to extend the hoses across to the tank. Shouldnt be hard just a trip to napa. I think it will really help.

i don't think it will make much difference. you're only at full for a short time, and even then it's only 180 lb. they are often placed on the opposite side of the captain's helm to balance the weight of the captain. i would just have one person move to starboard to balance things. we have a 50 gallon tank on the aft port side and seldom have a problem.

in my ponton they did that also except I have the gli where the transom pod is farther back so it dosent tuck the motor under the sund deck any way they just extended the hoses ran a water seperator. i think this is how most manufacturs are going go check out a new pontoon and see how they did it get som more ideas
