Anybody have an automotive filter # for a 2010 Merc 115 4 st

#1 Post by albow » Wed Oct 13, 2010 1:57 am

I went all the way to BPS the other day to get a quicksilver filter only to learn they have most of their filters locked up in the service department after 5pm. Does anyone know what part # I need in an automotive filter?

Wix's website has a cross reference guide:

... except the Wix site does not cross to outboards.

I have heard of a Fram number but I use the Mercury part. You can get them on I-boats for $8.

,,, but not if you don't have the number. I tried looking in the applications first.

It is good to know. Thanks

I tried this at the auto parts store and they cocked their heads like puppies.

Actually. my Quicksilver # is different. I called Merc to ask about a Quicksilver filter I found at Academy that siad it would work, but Merc said it wouldn't because it was an older part that was actually discontinued. My part # is 877761Q01.

I submitted it to Wix, I can only find a Quicksilver/Mercury part number for that filter. $6.78 each at the site below:

I am not sure how much you can trust dealers but they have sold me at least 3 different styles/part numbers and said they were all the same thing. One guy even sent me home with a shorter one that was a real PITA. I never accepted another one of those.
I have done over 30 oil changes on this motor, maybe more like 35-40 since I was doing it at 50 hours for a while when it was "making oil"
I have bought a lot of oil filters. I have paid everything from $7 to $18.

So I checked the Wix site for a cross ref to my filter 35-877761K01 and no match.
So I went for the long shot, tried the Autozone (parts store in my area) and low and behold what did I see before my very eyes, it gave me a cross ref to a couple filters, one being a STP filter at a smashing price of about $3.50.

So my question to you all, is a filter a filter thats just a filter? Can anyone give up a good reason as not to use a cross ref filter (non marine type). I have no problem buying the mercury filter at 2-3 times the price, but I do not have a boat shop real close to just stop in at easily.

Good, bad, indifferent....what do you say, let me have it.

Most filters are about equal in construction and quality, there's nothing marine specific that goes into their construction. It's just a steel body and paper element.

Never heard of a single problem using a cross referenced filter. I just like Wix because their site is easy to use and I have a supplier 2 miles from my house. I've used Fram, Purolator and Wix on my Starcraft, 11 seasons with zero issues.
