Yamaha and Mercury

They certainly seem to share a parent.
I am moving right along on my repower Merc 60 to Yamaha 70 and so far every one of the bolt holes have lined up. This has been pretty painless. The only thing I have seen so far that is different is the cable ends (shift/throttle)m fuel hose connector and the control box power cable connector. I bought a new controller and cables so that is no big deal. (mounting holes lined up)
I am hanging the motor tomorrow but the holes measure the same.
Then it will just be to hook up the steering cable, plug in the controller and hook up the shift/throttle.
Pretty easy stuff.

I am sure I have a surprise coming but so far so good. The problem is I am getting the itch to ride so a lot of those little things like pressure washing the boat may have to wait for next time.

I am going to go put 3 quarts of oil on the console right now so I don't forget.

10 years and 3075 salt water hours mostly. It still runs great and nothing seriously wrong but I know the second 3000 hours will involve a lot of $800 surprises. I saw a SEI lower unit, a tilt and trim rebuild and the usual starters, stators and other expensive little widgets.

I like new and I got a 6 year warranty (Yamaha promotion) for $80)

Has anyone done anything with the YDIS diagnostic interface and the laptop software?

The software seems to be out there but the cable is still a mystery. My guess is the $200 ($300 is closer to list) secret dongle is a single ended to differential chip. I would really like to watch it on a scope for a minute. I bet the data line out is 12v single ended NRZI and the input to the USB port is exactly the same except the 5v differential USB uses.

The other thing I found is there are LED drivers for the overheat and oil indicators. There is also one for "check engine" that flashes out codes like the old GMs.

The power head parts look just like my old Mercury. Some of the pictures look exactly like the ones in the Mercury shop manual.

I do think I am going to be able to hook up my mechanical oil and water temp gauge adding the senders. There is a water pressure port.

YDIF is the laptop interface the dealers use. The kit with the cable and software disk is cruising in the area North of $300 and you can certainly pay more.

It is really not necessary to work on the motor but I was curious.

It looks like there is a key generator out there along with "cracked" versions of the software and the stock (key required) software is all over but the cable/adapter is the tricky part. I guess that is why it costs so much. I understand it is only recently that people besides dealers could even buy it.

It might be fun to have but not $300-400 worth of fun.
One guy says he leaves his running all the time. That is probably overkill.

It will run on a very modest machine tho and just about any W/2000 and up machine will do it. I have some WYSE thin clients that I got for $20 and I would probably use one of them if I could get this going.
The bonus, besides being small, is they run on 12vdc

Maybe I will be ok then....as mine is a 2009 with prob. less than 300 hrs an is used in fresh water & dry stored.

Greg the drain plug on yours is in the same exact place as my 90's is. See #4 in the photo below.
