can it be this drastic?

#1 Post by Pontoon Really? » Sat Sep 29, 2012 4:01 pm

I have a Sylvan RPT 8522 with a 150 Optimax. The boat has run great all year. I hane not used it in about a month. I could only top out at 28 mph. I usually run around 40 - 42 MPH.
Could the growth on the tunes slow me down that much?

Thanks in advance!!

What do the toons look like? If they are encrusted, it can easily rob that much speed.

Yes. Are you running in salt water? Is your bottom painted? As Greg asked, how does your bottom look? A few barnacles on your prop can cause huge losses.

I don't know about salt water but I would say no in freshwater. We let our boat sit for a few weeks if we are traveling and when we use it I really don't see any difference.

Algae growth slows our tritoon down 6-9 mph. after I scrape the algae off with a plastic paint scraper we gain 6-9 mph.

Could be a leak in a log and now your toon is ALOT heavier. It happened to me.

I am running 4800 RPM WOT. I have only lost 200 RPM. I did not think about the fuel - quite possible.

The logs are all scummed up......fresh water - dirty lake. I will have the tunes checked for leaks when I pull her out later this month.

Thanks to all!!

I keep my boat in the water (fresh) from March thru October. In Louisiana (think hot water), I have to scrape my toons at least 3 times a year and as I approach toon scraping time, I bet I lose close to 10mph in top end speed because of the growth. The boat performs like a PIG with all that growth on there.

4800 rpm is less than it should at wot. Shouldn't it be closer to 5500-6000? You may want to check your tac or your prop is not right for your toon......
