Stopping Door Rattling?

#1 Post by andrew_ » Tue Jun 18, 2013 8:51 pm

I have an old '88 Harris Kayot and everything from the fence supports to the door stops are welded on. Ugly in a lot of ways, but solid as a rock. Unfortunately the doors rattle in the door stops something awful. To the point of extreme annoyance at full throttle.

I'll post an actual picture of them, but for the time being this is pretty much what it looks like: Image

There is about a 1/4" of play in the door stop bracket and no other hardware (other than the pin hinge) that is present on the door or the supporting rail/fence.

Any creative suggestions on how to create a snug fit and kill the rattling?

It's the old school pin style hinge, but it is a liftable hinge, and it does drop into that. There's just a lot of play in the bracket and it causes lots of rattling.

OK then you can get some foam rubber for it to drop into to stop the rattle

Mine does the same thing when I am trolling. I am going to try and put the fuzzy side of velco on both side to dampen the vibration. Too thick and the door will not close.

You should be able to take any fabric or material that is thin and glue it to the insides of the bracket where the door slides into it. This should dampen the rattle noise.

My doors have plastic brackets so the metal door frame doesn't rattle while it is closed - they also serve as a riser to help keep the fence off the deck.

The problem with anything sticky/glued etc that I've tried this morning is that when the door is put back into the stop, if it's not done with great care, the corner of the door peels off whatever material the stop was lined with.

Unfortunately switching to plastic stops isn't an option as the old ones are welded on. Got a couple of opinions that removing it would damage the fencing. Not something I'm willing to do.

Put the foam rubber piece on the bottom of the bracket, not on the sides. This won't allow the door to come all the way down to the ground, (about 1/4 from the floor instead) but it would prevent rattling. No worries about peeling anything off the sides of the bracket either then.

You could get a gate latch to hold the door tight. Mine came with them.

if you have some old water hose laying around, cut a 1" section and just snap it on the bottom of the gate :thumbsup

I stick my flip flop in the crack. It only rattles at idle.
