Dirty toons = slower speed?
Purchased new triton this year and keep it in a slip. 24' w/ Merc 150, both boat and motor are brand new. Anyway, earlier this year, I could run 36-39mph w/ my family on board. Last weekend, took boat out, would only do 29mph, same weight on board. I was guessing I had water in one of my toons. Pulled out the boat today, no water, but my toons were all covered in moss. Is it possible this is what is slowing down my boat? Boat runs fine besides that.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Re: Dirty toons = slower speed?
once you get them cleaned please Sharkhide your toons. Protect your investment. Our Toons are often like tires for some people. Its the only part that keeps your boat from sinking and yet they are often neglected. Clean them thoroughly and then sharkhide them. It last about 3 years before needing to be reapplied. All that is required after a day on the lake is a fresh water wet washcloth and wipe them down. My boat is brand new and before it ever saw the water I applied sharkhide. If you are familiar with Keystone Lake (West of Tulsa Ok) you will know it has a tendency to get a little muddy. I still have no waterline showing at all and my boats performance is increasing due to the motor being broken in.

If you keep your boat in the water most of the time, it's best to take ScotchBrite pads and clean the hull every time you use it.
That'll minimize major grunt work it'll take to clean the toons later.

Faster maybe...but 10-15 MPH? I don't think so. It'll help but not that much.
Just verified it on Snopes. Liberals are complete mouth breathing idiots.

I agree with repete. I leave mine in the river from april to october . Gets pretty scummy but I never lost more than a couple mph.

I lose close to 6-8mph with dirty toons (keep in the water in Louisiana). At least 3 times a summer, I get under the boat and scrape with one of those nylon plate scrubbers and the Scotch Brite Pads.

Re: Dirty toons = slower speed?
Dirty toons create huge drag. Scrub them every so often while at a sandbar and you should be fine.

Re: Dirty toons = slower speed?
yup, I easily lose a good 5 mp or more when the logs get dirty. I used a wide plastic putty knife to scrape my logs a few times a year and if I'm ambitious I'll use a scotch brite pad after the putty knife to get them a little cleaner.

Re: Dirty toons = slower speed?
I also have a bad case of moss drag. we applied sharkhide last winter hopping it would slow the growth down or at least make it easier to get it off. No such luck, at least the logs are still shinny after I blast and scrap the moss off.
The boat stays in 7 months and the hole point of getting the slip in the first place was not to have to mess with hollen the bot out. so this week end I am pulling her out cutting the sharkhide off the submerged portion off the logs (sharkhide has kept the logs nice and shinny) and applying a good ant fowling paint ( without copper) this is the only part of my winter overhaul that didn't work out the way that i planed

Re: Dirty toons = slower speed?
Please post back after you clean the toons and let us know if you gained your speed back. Thanks!
