First ride on new toon

#1 Post by SeaBreeze » Thu Apr 03, 2014 11:57 am

78 degrees yesterday, grabbed the wife and headed to the lake for our first trip on our first toon. After motoring for a few miles, I found a cove and anchored a while we had a soda and some snacks under the bimini top. My wife said we should do this more often :nana :nana :nana , this is from a woman who really does not care for the water and hated going out on my bass boat. Looks like the toon found a home. Sorry, I was so busy having fun, I forgot to take any pictures.

My top gps speed was 28.7mph at 5500rpm. I have a 23' seabreeze fish model, underskined with 90hp merc, full fuel, gear with two souls on board. Sound about right to those in the know?

I can hardly wait to get out to fish a little now!

BTW- a 55lb thrust trolling motor will not hold a 23' toon in 5-10mph winds, will be upgrading the motor if I plan on bass fishing away from the bank.

Slight numer revesal, I posted my eariler post on my windows phone at work, I was getting 27.8mph gps vice 28.7.

The stock prop is a 14x13 I think, but it is not the one on the toon. I am not a speed nut but I take all my props to performance props after getting my Triton TR-200 prop worked on and picking up 4mph on top end. When I dropped off the stock toon prop, I picked up one that had been tuned and recupped, I think the base prop is a solas 14x13.5. When I tested the same toon at another dealers demo last fall, I was seeing bout 26.5 to 27mph on my phone gps, so I thought I was in the ballpark with a new prop and under skinned.

I was thinking that was just an "ok" speed, you guys making me think my gps need calibrating. Between the tuned prop, lifting strakes and underskinning, the dealer thought I would pick a few mph, that is why I thought I was in the ballpark.

I think you actually might be able to get a few more out of it since you have strakes. A 90hp would push mine past 30mph easy.

i have a MinnKota Terrova 80lb thrust. It has a 60" shaft. I added the MinnKota CoPilot System.

It has plenty of power and works really well, including on breezy days. You've gotta have the CoPilot... Allows you to operate the trolling motor from anywhere on the boat. I have only used the foot control once, and that was to just make sure it works. Being free to sit/stand/walk around, and still control the trolling motor is great. One day, I'll upgrade and add the iPilot... but, that's another $400 or so dollars....

I've got a Terrova 80 lbs thrust with ipilot on a 23' boat and it works great. No complaints at all!

Yep, pretty much wasted $600 on the one I have but it does have wireless remote that is cool. I looked at a MK 105 lb with ipilot.
