Speakers mounted on Ski tow

#1 Post by rsscoggins » Mon Mar 21, 2016 7:33 am

All

We just put a deposit down on a Sylvan 8522 Mirage Cruise LS. Full tube tritoon with a 150 Yamaha. For us the Sylvan seemed to be the biggest bang for the buck.

I will be adding an amp and a few more speakers myself but want some speakers that we can hear while floating in the water. I know the "roll bar" boats (ski boats) mount them on the towers, but has anyone mounted a pair of speakers on the ski tow - the one we ordered sits in front of the engine and is not a single pylon/bar. Perfect place for some speakers.

Thoughts? I tried searching but depending on the search terms, I either come up empty handed or 30 pages of stuff and still haven't found what I was looking for.

I've seen them on ski tow bars and also on the back rail of the pontoon depending on what you have and if you can clip them to the back rails. The hardest part would be getting a clean install with the wires. I suppose you could drill and fish the wire out the bottom. If you fish the wire through the bar I would use rubber grommets to seal the tow bar as well as protect the wire. An alternative would be mounting the speakers close to floor level so you don't have to go as far with the wire and just bring the wires out the transom.

For $200.00 I'll sell you the ones I just took off of my boat. I replaced everything with Rockford Fosgate.

that would be pretty cool. fishing the ski tow bar wouldn't be too bad. one hole at the base with a grommet and one at the speaker mount. you might be able to unbolt the base of the tow bar and feed the wire up the hollow bottom. they are pricey, but wet sounds makes a nice swivel mount so you could change the orientation depending on whether you were in the boat or the water.

I have a new Avalon coming and I have thought about doing the same. There is a an audio shop right across from the boat dealer, so I plan on going over there and asking what they think the best approach is. If I get any good info I will pass it along.

Where did you have these mounted? What is the inside diameter (ID) of the clamps? Can the clamps be rotated?

I had them mounted on my wakeboard tower. The inside diameter is 2.25"
The clamps cannot be rotated but, they can be removed.

Definitely interested. We are test driving a similar boat tomorrow before we finalize the details on the one we are ordering. I will measure the ski tow diameter (got to remember to bring my calipers) to see what size it is.

It looks pretty beefy (picture below) but not sure it is 2.25" like the wakeboard tower. Do you know if they make different size clamps? Who makes the cans and I can research it?

Wow, I forgot how much I paid for these! I'm sure you could put more rubber inside them to clamp on a smaller tube.

that screw crossing the upright bar just above the weld may cause some issues. hopefully you'll be able to access the nuts underneath the deck and work from the underside. as far as the diameter of the bar. i've put several extra racks on my tower on my mastercraft, and they all pretty much just use rubber strips to compensate for differences in diameter of various towers. also forgot to mention, $200 is a good deal on a set of tower speakers. if you don't want them, please let me know. i have a roll cage on a bronco that could use those speakers.

I measured the ski tow and I think we are good.

I will take them for $200. Contact me via PM and we can arrange shipping and payment.

We are in the DFW area. Where are you?
