One minute isn't too bad. It's not great, but could be worse. I had water drain out of mine for over ten minutes and it was about 45 gallons. If worse comes to worst and you need to patch a crack it's not too bad of a fix. You jusy need to find a competent aluminium welder.Amosmoses33 wrote:One of them gave me the woosh and air came out....
the other not so good....water ran out of it for a good minute. I am going to replace the plugs and use plumbers tape for a good seal and see if it does it again this weekend. If it does, I'll be asking for some detailed help on how to pressure it up and find a leak.
Thanks!

No I guess a minute isn't too bad compared to 10 minutes. I am not really understanding how to pressurize the pontoon but I will worry about that next week if my leak continues. I found some brass plugs at walmart and wrapped them with the teflon tape and put them in this morning while it was still cool outside. Hopefully it was the plastic plugs. Everyone have a safe holiday weekend! I am excited, my first with my own boat!

You should switch to SS plugs when you can. Brass plugs will eventually corrode your aluminium.

Guys,
What's the purpose of pressurizing the toons? Seems to me any pressure I had in the tank has leaked out anyway. Do the toons need to be pressurized or is that just a natural thing that occurs with the weather changes?

Re: Water In Pontoons
You pressurize the pontoon's so that you can look for leaks. When the marina performed this test on my logs they sprayed them with soap and water so that they could see if air was escaping through any holes or cracked welds. The logs do not remain pressurized after the test. Although changes is temperature can create pressure inside the logs this isn't part of the test.jeffybear wrote:Guys,

aha, so there is no magic to pressurizing the toons. This is exactly how they found my leak. Air, water and soap. Thanks Ron!!

Re: Water In Pontoons
I am getting water in both logs, the starboard drains for about 6-8 minutes after a couple trips. I am bummed about tring to find and patch the leaks.

Re: Water In Pontoons
My logs have 3 plastic plugs on the top. One for each section. The plugs have a very small hole in them. I assume that is to let the logs breath without building up preasure with changing of tempuratures. I assumed all pontoon logs would have to have vents for this purpose. If you don't have a vent, it seems the log could expand and break a seam, therefore a leak accures.

Corrosion issues. A search on here will reveal some good discussion on the topic.

Re: Water In Pontoons
Yeah get rid of the brass plugs asap. The brass being the superior metal will cause your aluminum hull to corrode. Manufacturers use plastic or stainless so that's not an issue. When I restored my Starcraft, the guy used brass here and there. All the areas touching the brass had corroded severely. Enough to put 2 quarter sized holes in the transom.

When dissimilar metals are in contact, there is a small electrical current that will erode one of the metals.GregF wrote:Galvanic Corrosion?

Re: Water In Pontoons
I removed the brass plugs. The one on the left wooshed air like before. The one on the right didn't go woosh, but no water came out and I couldn't feel any water in it when i stuck my pinky in the whole. I guess I have some pin hole above the waterline or something that is letting it not hold pressure but is not getting water in it.
Thanks for the help.
